Varathron: Quarantine Story

by Bart Tomaszewski

In Corona Corner, we are asking musicians how the outbreak has effected them, how did they adapt to the situation, what did they learn. One of the legends of Greek Black Metal scene speaks his story. So if someone don’t know Varathron, this is really huge shame for this person! Let’s see what Achileas have to say this time.

Hi! How are you doing during corona outbreak?
Hello to all Metal Jacket team! Thanks for having me. Doing great. We didn’t have many problems or deaths from the virus here in Greece but you never know… it might be get back to us later! Now we are all back to working harder than before and unfortunately many people lost their jobs or got heavily depressed.

What have you cancelled/postponed due coronavirus?
We have postponed several festivals and exclusive shows in Europe with Varathron as well as an unannounced tour across the Atlantic… Unfortunately 2020 is a catastrophe for every live band, organizers and workers!

How the global coronavirus pandemic is directly impacting bands?
We don’t make a living out of the live shows, we don’t tour that much so we don’t make much money out of it. For other, professional bands it’s a pure catastrophe. I have several friends that make a living on the road, most of them are really depressed by I hope things will get better soon.

How are you keeping your fans during this chaotic period?
We are preparing a double live album and also preparing new releases! Corona was a good excuse for us to work more on new tracks, new releases and be more creative!

What will metal look like when we re-emerge from isolation?
Hope  it will be even better than before and more people will go to live shows and have fun! Also, I think cause of the virus many musician found free time to compose new albums so I really hope 2021 will be an amazing year music wise.

Who will suffer the most after all: musicians, organizers promoters…
I think you cannot measure this… Professional musicians and professional organizers are in deep shit and affected heavily emotionally and financially. Speaking about Greece, government doesn’t really care about artists and didn’t ever helped them so its really hard now.

What is your isolation soundtrack?
Ha nice question! I guess the upcoming “Katavasia” album! We recorded and produced the whole album during 2 months of isolation! It was epic and we will always remember this album created during these weird days!

Besides gigs, what/whom do you miss the most?
I miss the action, seeing crazy fans, supporters and friends around the world. Also I miss some very close friends and family members that can’t get back to Greece yet.

Do you have any rehearsals during quarantine? If yes, how do they look like?
Not a single rehearsal, we didn’t even record all together. All of my bands have members around Greece so during quarantine we weren’t allowed to move and rehearse. Thanks Satan we have internet and manage to create remotely!

Thank you so much for your time. Stay safe!
Thank you too! Be safe, strong and stay brutal!
