Thanatopsis: Quarantine Story

by Ivona Bogner

In Corona Corner, we are asking musicians how the outbreak has effected them, how did they adapt to the situation, what did they learn.  Thanatopsis will release debut album “Initiation” on October 23rd, so let’s hear their Quarantine Story as kind of their promotion.

Hi! How are you doing during corona outbreak?
Hi there! We have all been healthy, so far everyone has luckily been OK. I am just trying to navigate through everything as best as I can.

What have you cancelled/postponed due coronavirus?
A lot of concerts – I had tickets to see a lot of shows that are not happening this year now. I had tickets to see Testament, Sepultura, Judas Priest, Primus, Fleshgod Apocalypse, and Insomnium, among others….

How the global coronavirus pandemic is directly impacting bands?
A lot of bands are struggling since they are unable to tour. I noticed that a lot of then have internet shows now, which has been something, but not having shows has been awful.

How are you keeping your fans during this chaotic period?
Well our debut album, “Initiation” comes out on October 23rd, so we are working to get the word out about that.

What will metal look like when we re-emerge from isolation?
A lot of people are excited to go back out to shows, so I think the market for live music will be there for the clubs/venues that survive. I think ticket prices and merch prices will likely be higher.

Who will suffer the most after all: musicians, organizers promoters…
Musicians is the obvious answer, but also you have to think about the band crew, sound engineers, venue employees, as these are the people that probably have it the worst right now…

What is your isolation soundtrack?
Paradise Lost “Obsidian”, Tryptykon with the Metropole Orkest, Lucifer, Ensiferum “Thalassic”, Vltimas S”omething Wicked March In”, Cattle Decapitation  “Death Atlas”, among others.

Besides gigs, what/whom do you miss the most?
No traveling has been a tough one.

Do you have any rehearsals during quarantine? If yes, how do they look like?
No, we are not rehearsing until things get better.

Thank you so much for your time. Stay safe!
