Batushka released their first album “Litourgiya” around Christmas 2015. They quickly rose through the black metal ranks, getting more popular by the minute. Soon enough, they did several European tours, headlining festivals around Europe. Without a big record label funding their work, their success was just organic, they are a refreshingly polished black metal band. The well played anonymity added to their appeal. They didn’t have a cult persona to follow (no papas here), just great music to enjoy.
But trouble in the church soon followed their success. In December 2018 Krzysztof Drabikowski, known as Христофор published a video detailing the situation in the band. He identified himself as the creator of the musical project Batushka, the lyrics, music, cover and all. He explained the history of the band, the recording and how it was brought to stage. Also, he spoke about the conflict with the singer and record label owner Bartłomiej Krysiuk (Варфоломей), which ended in Krysiuk leaving the band, just to change his mind later and take the name for himself. Furthermore, he explained how this sudden face reveal was the only way to tell the whole story, and inform the audience.
Batushka was meant to be an anonymous musical project, and from the beginning it was the idea to keep the line-up unknown to the public.
After almost four months we finally got some news on the fate of Batushka. A scan of a court decision from 18th of April 2019 was published on Krzysztof’s Batushka twitter account recently. The court ruling shown below prevents Bart from releasing any new material under the Batushka name until the case is closed.
The Batushka band Facebook website, run by Bartłomiej Krysiuk, published sneak peaks of the new album, and a link to the website hospodi.com. Rumors have spread that the new album was to be called “Hospodi”, and artwork, editions and prices for the album can be seen on the Metal Blade Indie merch website. This is indicative of Bart having all the material for a new album, and a set deal with a major record label. The links we found do not lead to actual items, but they grant us an insight into what was planned for the band.
At the same time, Krzysztof published new material for his project Batushka. The song “Pecn’ 1” features a new dimly lit cover art, some candles and awesome new Batushka music. Feel free to check it out below.
