Acclaimed Dag Nasty frontman Dave Smalley returns to the hardcore arena with DON’T SLEEP, the East Coast outfit he has fronted since they started in 2017.
Smalley’s astute lyrics are the catalyst propelled by his musical colleagues from the East Coast punk scene including Garrett Rothman (bass), Tom McGrath (guitar), Jim Bedorf (drums), and Tony Bavaria (guitar), who have also played in a number of bands previously on labels such as Blackout Records, Eulogy Recordings, Sony, and Megaforce. The resulting Turn The Tide is less an invention than a creative liberation – a group of East Coast musicians at the peak of their game, or as Smalley puts it, “Five friends playing hardcore and trying to make a positive impact on the world.”
Described as punchy, driving punk rock and triumphant melodic hardcore, Turn The Tide sets the bar infusing melody and an element of pop sensibility into the sound of DON’T SLEEP. Additionally, while callbacks and influences to classic hardcore and punk bands like 7 Seconds, Judge, Black Flag, and Bad Brains, a modern spin reminiscent of bands influenced by Smalley like Rise Against is front and center on Turn The Tide.
Grammy-nominated producers Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland (August Burns Red), along with New York hardcore icon Walter Schreifels (Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Quicksand), and Matt Holmes contributed to producing the record, and several songs were engineered by Brian McTernan (singer for Battery and Be Well, owner of Salad Days studio, producer of Snapcase, Turnstile, and many others).
DON’T SLEEP released two EPs, Don’t Sleep in 2017 (Unity Worldwide Records), Bring The Light in 2018 (Reaper Records), and has shared stages with Shelter, Sick Of It All, Madball, Face To Face, and performed on the final Vans Warped Tour in 2018.
