Choreomanic was formed when the whole world collapsed, in the spring of 2020. Joost W. van der Graaf, who has a rich carer behind, says about Choreomanic: “This project is not only a musical statement but also a call to action against (cultural) oppression.” Enjoy in his Corona interview.
May everyone move and create in freedom!”
Hi! How are you doing during corona outbreak?
Hi there! I’m doing pretty well thank you! Obviously no gigs but a lot of creative ideas and time to learn new stuff. Furthermore, I’m blessed with a beautiful family and good friends. We’re still laughing!
What have you cancelled/postponed due coronavirus?
Well, my new project Choreomanic has actually emerged from the pandemic itself! I like to think I can get this thing on the road in the near future but I guess we’ll have to see… As you might know, I am also the bassist for Pestilence and that’s a different story…
Since the beginning of this madness, there have been two postponed tours apart from canceled weekend runs. In March 2020 we were about to fly to the US for a tour with Possessed when all went sideways. Early 2021 we were supposed to kick off a worldwide tour in three chapters, Europe, Asia and again US, for the 30th anniversary of “Testimony Of The Ancients”. Let me see…. Wacken was postponed of course! I try not to think about these things too much….
How the global coronavirus pandemic is directly impacting bands?
It’s devastating. A lot of people are struggling to find ways to keep on going with music in a world that seems to be plunged into fear. There’s simply no perspective. Though I believe record sales are pretty ok or maybe even better, there seems to be some sort of shift in the industry. Nobody really knows… I believe it is important to stay true to your cause under all conditions for as long as you possibly can, so when this bad dream is over you can get back to it just like that!
How are you keeping your fans during this chaotic period?
Choreomanic is just getting started, so we’ll have to see if people are willing to check out something new and a bit weird…. Pretty crazy time to start a new project I guess. It just happened!
What will metal look like when we re-emerge from isolation?
Oh, I think just as good or probably even better. I think people will appreciate coming together at shows and festivals more than they ever did! Yep, I believe the international metal community will come out of this stronger than ever before!
Who will suffer the most after all: musicians, organizers promoters…
The whole industry, all the wheels in the machine… it is hard to tell who will suffer the most since they’re all connected. I know that today, here in the Netherlands, the cultural world (venues, theaters etc.) is getting beating after beating from this government.
I have some bass students I have been giving online lessons for some time now. I cannot teach them at the music school, one on one, but I can for instance invite them to my house, with my family and greater risks…. There’s just no logic anymore and people are fed up.
What is your isolation soundtrack?
“Apostle” by Immolation! Or if you mean a track of my own: all tracks on Choreomanic, since that is actually an isolation album!
Besides gigs, what/whom do you miss the most?
Just the freedom… Of going to that local metal bar to hang out with people, talking about nothing, listening to loud music… Or off to the cinema to catch a movie… Those things I took for granted 2 years ago.
Do you have any rehearsals during quarantine? If yes, how do they look like?
A few with Pestilence… Never enjoyed rehearsing as much as these past years! If all goes well I hope to rehearse with Choreomanic and do live shows!
Thank you so much for your time. Stay safe!
Thank you for this interview! Also stay safe!
