Krowos – Verbum Luciferi
Label: Nigredo Records
Date: February 17, 2017
A project created and led by a drummer doesn’t sound promising to begin with, does it? All jokes aside, Krowos is an Italian band started in 2011 with an already substantial discography under their belt, and “Verbum Luciferi” is their second full-length album. The band is actually led by a talented multi-instrumentalist who goes by the name Frozen.
What we get on this album is, plainly said, Black Metal. Behind the minimalist cover artwork we can find a sort of primitive and raw Black Metal, yet not in the vein of many crappy Darkthrone wannabe projects. Sure, this release is primarily based on the cold, and fairly occult atmosphere, however, Krowos doesn’t base their rawness on the terrible production but instead use the basic Black Metal means and diversify them to create engaging compositions that do not let the listener’s attention wander off. Often enough you can hear a Doom Metal input on some parts, which seems to be a familiar treat for many Italian Black Metal bands. I can honestly say that the only thing which doesn’t seem to fit in this whole picture are those shrieking vocals, but those are very often intersected with nicely done clean chants in Latin. Krowos are creating very long songs, which is often an unsurpassable trap when it comes to this particular genre, but these guys have enough ability to arrange the tunes so that they easily avoid repetitiveness. They do so by implementing a lot of variations in guitar department, drum patterns (this was sort of expected from a drummer’s project) and acoustic passages characteristic for such music.
Krowos might not be remembered by their original concepts. There are not too many catchy moments on this release that will stick to your mind for days. At the same time you will most certainly remember the atmosphere and the feeling these Italians leave you with. This is one of those albums meant to be played in a calm, suiting place despite a dose of aggression it carries. “Verbum Luciferi” needs your complete attention to be felt and understood completely. In that scenario it cannot miss its purpose.
