“Medtiations” is 13th Kataklysm’s full length album. Despite the album title, they did not change the course. Kataklysm still play what they know the best: death metal.
“Meditations” continues in the same direction as the previous album, “Of Ghosts And Gods” (2015, Nuclear Blast). Melodic riffs, excellent drumming, diabolical vocals, great lyrics… Production and sound, in general, follows the curse of previous albums.
I will try to avoid philosophical lyrics analysis and leave you the space for own interpretation, but in order to write at least decent review, I will focus on my personal favorites.
Opening track, “Guillotine” speaks of betrayal, and somehow fits my character the best: never forget, never forgive! The song “Outsider”, as I understood it, is a song about the followers and the leaders. My first association: Kataklysm never fit in realm of pure death metal. Their style has always been unique. At some point of their career they changed the style a bit, even if their sound might be described as twisted child of Kataklysm and Ex Deo at some parts, that is their seal and why they stay loyal to themselves. Kataklysm were never leaders in death metal, but not a followers either, so yeah, they are outsiders!
“Born To Kill And Destined To Die”, titled in legendary Lemmy’s style. The point is: evil is human product, and as I interpret the lyrics, it might be a perfect picture of world we live in, where people are trained to kill each others from wrong reasons (is there any good reason to kill someone?).
“In Limbic Resonance”might be described as old school Kataklysm that I saw live for the first time back in 2004 clashes Katakylsm of XXI century. Older fans will love it!
“What Doesn’t Break Doesn’t Heal” has clear message: learn from your own mistakes or what doesn’t kill just you makes you stronger.
“Bend The Arc, Cut The Cord” again old school song, dedicated to all those who are complaining whole their lives and doing nothing to change it.
Album is produced by guitarist Jean-François Dagenais and drummer Olivier Beaudoin. Mixis signde by Jay Ruston (Antrax, Stone Sour), master by Paul Logus (Pantera). Oculta Designs stands by album cover.
The best definition of “Meditations” was given by Maurcio Iakono:
It’s a very personal album, very honest Kataklysm record. It’s us in 2018!
If the meditation can be defined as a practice where an individual uses a technique, such as focusing their mind on a particular music, thought or activity, to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state, than Kataklysm are gurus!
Highlights: “Bend The Arc, Cut The Cord”, “Guillotine”, “In Limbic Resonance”, The Last Breath”.
