Prospects: Quarantine Story

by Ivona Bogner

In Corona Corner, we are asking musicians how the outbreak has effected them, how did they adapt to the situation, what did they learn. Canadian Progressive Metal band Prospects is promoting the single “Orphic Trigger” and upcoming EP “Recalling”. Anthony Zicari, drummer, speaks his Quarantine Story.

Hi! How are you doing during corona outbreak?
We have been doing well, some of us are still working our day jobs (essential services) while trying to prepare for our upcoming release. All of us are still healthy.

What have you cancelled/postponed due to coronavirus?
We had a few shows lined up at the beginning of the pandemic (Feb, March) that were cancelled as well as possible shows for the summer months that were in the works.

How the global coronavirus pandemic is directly impacting bands?
Well with the option of playing shows or touring out of the question bands are losing a lot of revenue on merch and ticket sales. Bands are going to have to get creative in order to stay afloat unless they have prepared for something like this. Some bands/artists who are primarily internet-based will continue to do well because they have created something where they don’t need to go out and play for people, they can play in the comfort of their own home.

How are you keeping your fans during this chaotic period?
We’re currently trying to keep a steady, consistent presence on social media to engage with people and grow our following. We’re pretty small-time so we wouldn’t consider having “FANS” yet outside of friends and family but we hope this release can help put us on the map.

What will metal look like when we re-emerge from isolation?
Hopefully, artists have taken the time to reflect and write during isolation. I think we all can gather some sort of inspiration from all of this mess. Whether that be really harsh sounds to show the struggles we’ve faced or uplifting melodies displaying how we’ve overcome it all.

Who will suffer the most after all: musicians, organisers promoters…
All will suffer but when it boils down to it most likely the musicians will suffer the most.

What is your isolation soundtrack?
Interstellar OST – Hans Zimmer.

Besides gigs, what/whom do you miss the most?
We miss the scene, hanging out with friends at venues, grabbing a bite to eat/ a drink and getting to sit INSIDE.

Do you have any rehearsals during quarantine? If yes, how do they look like?
No. Currently, we’re promoting the single “Orphic Trigger” and upcoming EP “Recalling”. We’ve already been writing material for a full-length album and most of our “rehearsing” or practising are done at home on our own. Once we have gigs planned we will plan more rehearsals.

Thank you so much for your time. Stay safe!
