Paradise: Quarantine Story

by Ivona Bogner

In Corona Corner, we are asking musicians how the outbreak has effected them, how did they adapt to the situation, what did they learn.  R.L. Black, vocalist of  Montreal based Volcanic Rock band Paradise, speaks for Metal Jacket Magazine.

Hi! How are you doing during corona outbreak?
Hey, for the time being, everyone is ok, no one has been sick, and families are ok too!

What have you cancelled/postponed due coronavirus?
We had a couple of Canadian shows canceled, all negotiations and bookings are trashed. And the fact that we just released a new album, not being able to promote it with shows totally sucks! Personally, I had concerts I wanted to attend that are also postponed.

How the global coronavirus pandemic is directly impacting bands?
Pretty sure it’s the same for everyone, can’t rehearse, no shows.

How are you keeping your fans during this chaotic period?
We are actually in the making of a few live video series, stay tuned…

What will metal look like when we re-emerge from isolation?
Probably the same as it was before, hopefully, bandmates will have been able to practice at home by themselves, easier for guitar and bass players than for drummers though.

Who will suffer the most after all: musicians, organizers promoters…

I think that venues have had it real bad, because most of them still have to pay expensive rent fees and have no sales, I’m afraid we won’t have anywhere to play when this is over! The Promoters I know aren’t too happy either, working really hard to keep their heads above water.

What is your isolation soundtrack?
I’ve been listening to the latest UUBBUURRUU album these days, Real “Sabbath” style retro rock.

Besides gigs, what/whom do you miss the most?
In all sincerity, our Friday nights rehearsals/parties are what I miss the most, getting drunk and playing loud is a thing I looked forward to every week, kind of like a gig, but no hauling gear around, no road and cheap motels

Do you have any rehearsals during quarantine? If yes, how do they look like?
Nothing yet, Christ!

Thank you so much for your time. Stay safe!
