Irij je moj Electronic One-Woman Folk Rock bend…. with a macabre twist

Meri-Tadic_Irij_1

Okupivši oko sebe tim vrhunskih glazbenika bend počinje i sa live nastupima, a u skoroj budućnosti možemo očekivati i nastavak albuma prvijenca Same zgode.

Meri: Irij je moj Electronic One-Woman Folk Rock bend…. with a macabre twist, kojeg sam ostvarila sasvim sama.

Meri:Ime sam odabrala proučavajući slavensku mitologiju.

MJM: Jesi li ikad razmišljala napisati Irij metal pjesmu?

Irij-Same-Zgode

MJM: Tvoj album Same zgode se bazira na folk tradiciji sinjske krajine.

Meri: Oduvijek sam u Irij-u stvarala sasvim sama. Sve pjesme i aranžmane sam sama izradila.

Obogati me u svakom pogledu.

Znači, bubanj, bas i  gitara, a ja sviram violinu i pjevam. Sve i dalje ja sama pišem, ali u radu s bendom me zapravo iznenadilo koliko snažnije to sve zvuči. Tim putem mislim I snimiti cijeli sljedeći album.I mogu sigurno reci da ce Rock elementi na sljedećem albumu biti istaknutiji nego do sada.

MJM: Koji su tvoji glazbeni uzori?

Meri: Nemam nikakvih.

MJM: Da li pratiš hrvatsku rock scenu?

Meri: Hvala i vama!

English version

MJM: Hi Meri, could you please introduce Irij for those who are not familiar with your work?

Meri: Hi Marin, of course. Irij is my Electronic One-Woman Folk Rock band… with a macabre twist. I have formed the band all by myself, which means that I am writing all the music, I’m producing my own music clips and records and actually everything else is just as well in my hands. One fan once has described my music as “A female, folkloristic version of Tool” and I actually really enjoyed that description because I am quite a big Tool fan myself.

MJM: What does Irij means?

Meri:  I’ve chosen the name while I was reading about Slavic Mythology. Irij is there mentioned as the celestrial home of pagan gods. That means somewhat of a world between the worlds and to me it seemed like a perfectly fitting name to my further musical plans.

MJM: The only common thing between Irij and your former band Eluveitie is folk music, but presented in different ways. Could you compare those two bands?

Meri: Actually I think that the only common thing is that I have been part of both of these bands. Eluveitie and Irij are very different even if our dedication to folklore somehow connects us. Maybe its even easier to point out the differences between both bands rather then what we have incommon. Because Irij really is a One-Woman Show while Chrigel writes his songs also within the band.

MJM: Did you ever consider doing metal song with Irij?

Meri: Well, a couple of friends are trying to convince me that I should write an Irij metal song and I actually might just do that on the next album.

MJM: How come you have decided to leave successful band and start solo career, which is a risky decision to make?

Meri: I’ve already been busy with Irij and released a first EP while I was still a member of Eluveitie. Back then I didn’t have the time to dedicate myself to Irij as much as I can now but that was definitely alright because I was wholeheartedly an Eluveitie member. My departure happened pretty much naturally, nobody has forced me to leave and it was my decision to go on with something new after 11 years of Eluveitie. If i listen to the album Origins now, I am actually even more satisfied that I have chosen to improve in a new way. The decision didn’t seem risky to me at all because I really didn’t have any expectations about Irij but to improve as a musician and there I have definitely succeeded. I have the great luck to work with some outstanding musicians right now and this gives me a brand new perspective on my own songwriting which is at the same time most important to me right now.

MJM: Your album Same zgode is based on traditional folk music from region of Sinj, Croatia. How come you have decided to record an album like that?

Meri: The idea came while I was visiting the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore in Zagreb. Accidentally I have found a collection of old songs from the mountainous region of Sinj. My father is born there and so I was somehow always connected to the rural music of that region. In their honour I have written the album.4602453904

MJM: On this record you play various instruments, was it a challenge to play all those instruments by yourself and did you have some help from other musicians?

Meri:  Since I have always worked, written and arranged all the Irij stuff on my own, I’ve loved to experiment with instruments and logically this was a challenge but mostly lots of fun for me. At the same time it would definitely limit me since I simply cant play the guitar or the piano like a guitarist or a pianist would. Therefore I have already on Same Zgode… had the idea to ask a few guest musicians to record some parts for me. That’s what lead to the guest appearance of AdalbjörnTrygvasson and Anna and Ivo from Eluveitie for instance as well as all the other artists that can be heard on my album.

MJM: As an artist do you think it is important to have open mind for any kind of musical influence?

Meri:  For me it definitely is, very important. It enriches me in every way. Except let’s say if we were talking about schlager or cajke music. There I really don’t have much understanding nor interest…hehe.

MJM: Where do you find  inspiration for your music and lyrics?

Meri:  I find inspiration in different moments and situations of my own life and of course in all the beauty of our planet. At the moment the situation in world politics tends to inspire me quite a lot as well as all the religions that are unfortunately been part of my life ever since I was born and I have no use for them whatsoever. There of course I find a somewhat more serious and not always nice and shiny inspiration.

MJM: When creating music do you pay attention on commercial aspect or you create it the way you feel it´s right?

Meri:  I think if I would pay so much attention to the commercial aspect of my music I would have never released Same Zgode… . Also if the commercial aspect would be so important to me I’d probably be better off working in an office 8 hours a day and not doing music at all. So, my music comes 100% from the heart.

MJM: Can we expect more music from Irij in the future and in which direction your music is gonna go?

Meri:  Yes, definitely. I wanna release my next record in 2016. Until then I will release a digital single containing a video clip in April/May 2015. It’s called High Above Sorrow and is a very, very special release to me. Because it is the first time in my career with Irij that I record a song with my session musicians. So we’ll have drums, bass and guitar and I sing and play the violin. Like a real band… haha… I am absolutely excited because we have already finished recording the drums and the bass and it sounds simply amazing. As I have already mentioned there is a new dimension that opens up to me while working with my musicians (Dominik Burkhalter – drums / Manu Rindlisbacher – bass / Maze Koon – guitars). I will keep writing and arranging the songs but worked out and recorded with the band it has actually even surprised myself how much more powerful it all sounds. In this manner I wanna record my entire next album and I can definitely say that the rock elements will more distinctive on the coming record.

MJM: Who are your idols in music?

Meri: I don’t really have any.

MJM: Are you familiar with Croatian rock scene?

Meri:  To be honest with you, I’ve missed a lot of this lately. Since I am so creative at the moment and spend so much time writing and playing I didn’t really have the time to follow up with the local scene. You might have to help me out there a bit after the interview. That would be great.

MJM: Which is your most memorable live show from both Eluveitie and Irij?

Meri: My most memorable concert with Eluveitie was probably the last one in Switzerlands. Its quite a meaningful moment, after 11 years and over 700 concerts, when you play the last show with the guys. When it comes to Irij it of course my live debut. I have proven to myself that I can be a Front-Woman and the audience was actually phenomenal to me. Actually a few Eluveitie fans came to the show and one guy told me that my music actually wasn’t his cup of tea at all. He just came because he liked me with Eluveitie. After the show he was totally excited and became an instant and big Irij fan. In fact many people seemed to have become fans after the concert which wasn’t really the case before they heard us playing live. This was a very special moment for me and quite a success.

MJM: Is there anything you would like to add?

Meri:  I really hope that I can bring my band to Split and present Irij to you all. I would be extremely happy and honoured. If you’d like to know more about me and my music please visit www.irijmusic.com or you can also find me on facebook.com/irijofficial.

Thanks to you all.
