Welicoruss is symphonic black metal band formed in Novosibirsk, Russia in 2005. In 2013, they decided to move in Europe, Czech republic. Currently, the band is touring across Europe. Siberian Heathen Horde Tour was opened in Frieburg on April 20, 2018. It covers 52 cities, including two shows in Serbia: Belgrade and Novi Sad. Metal Jacket Magazine brings you a brief interview with Alexey Boganov, Welicoruss mastermind.
Hi, how are you?
Hi! Everything is fine! Just a little tired, you know, we play so much and there is so much things to do. But, so far, everything goes great!
This is not the first time you are playing in Serbia. What brings you back here?
Yes, we have already played here back In 2015 on Exit Festival and also later in Belgrade with band Grai. This time we will present our new set, including some of brand new songs from the upcoming album “Siberian Heathen Horde” and also some of the old songs, from other albums! We have absolutely new outfit, show and decorations! Come, you will not regret!
On this tour, you will visit Belgrade and Novi Sad. What are your expectations?
We know, that our Serbian brothers are even more crazy than Russian people! So we are awaiting the same crazy support under the stage!
It seems you are working hard lately. Your tour includes over 40 cities and you are working on upcoming album “Siberian Heathen Horde”. Do you ever sleep?
We are playing more then 120 shows a year, almost every weekend, this is not so easy, because of other job, famillies, and not to forget, we are also working on our new album. Hard work, indeed, but we are working 24/7 so we can manage everything what needs to be done! We have time to sleep in our bus, when we are travelling between cities.
By now, you revealed cover art. Who made it?
Cover art of our new album was made by our Russian friends Thejretical Parts, they are awesome and professional team, and they truly know, how to do it right! I was very satisfied with the result, because it shows exactly what I wanted say by this piece of art!
You are coming from Siberia, but you moved to Prague, Czech Republic. Do you miss Siberian winters?
Yes, of course I miss Siberia, nature, atmosphere – here it is not even close to where I came from, even the forests are much tinier and you can not feel the real greatness there. The most I miss my family and friends of course! But relocation to Czech Republic brought a lot of big perspectives and possibilities, about which I could have only dreamed while living in Siberia!
GojkoMarić, Serbian guitarist, is part of Welicoruss since 2013. What do you know about Serbian metal scene?
Gojko – unique personality, very talented and hardworking, sometimes I am amazed by his obstinacy and optimism and he is really helping band a lot, I even think, that without him, it would be absolutely different band! To be honest I have no big knowledge about scene in Serbia (also as Gojko, because most of his youth he spent on Cyprus), sometimes we meet during our touring in Europe with Infest, The Stone and some other bands, but no more. Unfortunately, Serbian bands are not playing abroad much.
We can say that Welicoruss is now international band since band members are from Serbia and Czech Republic?
Yes, you can say so, but still I would rather call Welicoruss a Siberian band with our own unique style, atmosphere and image! For us is important to stick to our native roots, and promote Siberian theme to the masses.
As far as I know, you had three even four drummers at the same time. Why?
We have only one official drummer, but now we have 2 bass guitar players, because they both have work and not so much time, to play all the shows as we, they have full-time work, families etc. You know, the same as we, but we are still trying to hold tight!
How much time do you need to prepare for the show (make up, costumes)?
If we do not include soundcheck, then about 30-40 minutes.
The most significant shows you had by now?
We had a lot, but I think the most unforgettable gig was on Hellfest in France, which is known as one of the biggest festivals in Europe, and we player in front of more then 15000 people. Of course we had more amazing shows, for example show with Arkona in Bucharest, last week we player in Germany in Erfurt and Nuremberg, also many shows in Czech Republic were great!
The last concert you have visited is…
Difficult to say, because I almost don’t go to concerts as visitor! Probably it was a show of Moonspell last year, because I am really a huge fan of this band! They player in Prague, club was packed, and they played the songs from my favorite album “Irreligious”!
The first and the last CD you bought is…
First – Metallica “Master Of Puppets” and the last I think Therion “Sirius B”!
Any Russian bands you would like to recommend us?
To be honest, I don’t follow musical scene in Russia, because there is not much time, so I can’t say anything.
Thank you for your time, all the best!
Thank you for the support and we are looking forward to see you on our concerts in Novi Sad and Belgrade!
