Evolucija: Quarantine Story

by Ivona Bogner

In Corona Corner, we are asking musicians how the outbreak has effected them, how did they adapt to the situation, what did they learn. Swiss-Serbian band Evolucija shares their interesting thoughts about current situation with us.

Hi! How are you doing during corona outbreak
Hello Ivona. Thank you for shaking us up with your questions from this terrible dream! Maybe we are not yet aware of what happened. But it should make us think that humanity is no stronger than nature and show us how small we actually are. We should wake up and start to understand and respect nature and take care of it, otherwise nature will give us back worse.

What have you cancelled/postponed due coronavirus?
This virus started to spread when we were on tour in Ukraine and Belarus in February. We had a planned China tour for March this year. Then we had to cancel this tour at short notice and was postponed to October. However, we do not yet know whether this is possible. In May we planned concerts in Switzerland that were canceled, as well as some festivals in the summer.

How the global coronavirus pandemic is directly impacting bands?
We cannot yet assess the impact of this global pandemic. Concerts and events have been canceled or postponed worldwide. It just messed everything up. Nobody knows when and how it all gets rolling again. What will travel look like in the future? Will there be fear when people gather? This pandemic has brought huge uncertainty to bands.

How are you keeping your fans during this chaotic period?
To be honest, we have posted almost nothing on our profile. It has been difficult for us to post something where people around the world have contracted the virus and some have died. We felt sorry for the brave people who work in the hospitals. They are the real heroes of this pandemic – they owe the attention! The situation is sad, we didn’t have the strength to be active on our profile. We have maintained direct contact with people who live in a risk area. At this point, thank you to everyone who contacted us. Now the situation is better in most regions and we will post unpublished material from previous concerts in the near future to share these moments again with our fans and friends that we miss so much!

What will metal look like when we re-emerge from isolation?
It sure takes a while until we all relax again and don’t get scared immediately when someone coughs or something… However, we hope that we will emerge stronger after this isolation than we were before, with a great desire for conviviality, have more interest in culture and that the metal scene will become even stronger.

Who will suffer the most after all: musicians, organizers promoters…
We all lose in this pandemic! Most of all those who have lost a loved one. Many people will or have lost their jobs. It’s a very difficult time for musicians, organizers and promoters.

What is your isolation soundtrack?
It’s been a long time since we had so much time to listen to music. We discovered new bands, enjoyed new releases and acoustic versions of our favorite bands. We also recorded an acoustic version of a song by us. We don’t have a special isolation soundtrack.

Besides gigs, what/whom do you miss the most?
Most of all we miss being with our parents, who are older and with friends. We planned a trip to our family in Switzerland, which we had to cancel.

Do you have any rehearsals during quarantine? If yes, how do they look like?
We have no rehearsals at the moment, every band member practices at home. We are preparing a new album, so all our energy and strength is focused on the new songs.

Thank you so much for your time. Stay safe!
