New Years Day

Schedule your calendars for March 7th becaues New Years Day come with fourth album “Unbreakable” to Munich’s Backstage!

Hardly any band from the hard music sector looks back on such an eventful history as the New Years Day from Anaheim, California. Since their formation in 2005, the band has seen no less than twelve guitarists, five bassists and eight drummers come and go; their four EPs and three albums have been released by no less than six different record companies. And so it comes as no surprise that front woman and main songwriter Ash Costello – the only constant in this band plagued by constant line-ups – about the fourth album “Unbreakable” released last April says that “New Years Day is only now, after almost 15 years have finally found their destiny and really working constellation. “With” Unbreakable “the band is now between the 1st and 7th

Ashley “Ash” Costello wanted to be a musician as a little girl, just like her big idol, the singer Gwen Stefani, who, like Ash, comes from Anaheim, California. However, it was always clear to her that “her” music would be harder. In 2005 the time had come: The first incarnation of New Years Day, the band that Ash Costello has headed for almost a decade and a half, was formed.

No sooner had the band released their debut album with “My Dear” in 2007 than a change of members began, which basically continued uninterrupted until last year; Hardly any tour – and certainly no further studio visit – could have completed the New Years Day in a permanent cast. With this constant change, it was therefore no wonder that the sound of New Years Day changed constantly: Between alternative and Gothic Metal, hard rock and post-hardcore to pop-punk, the musical journey took place, which can be seen in the following heard two albums “Victim to Villain” (2013) and “Malevolence” (2015); With the third work there was also great success for the first time: “Malevolence” rose to number 45 on the Billboard Charts, afterwards the band headlined the VANS Warped Tour

Two more line-up changes later, the following happened: New Years Day allowed itself an exciting excursion with an EP that was not really serious. On “Diary of a Creep”, the band covered not only relatives like Pantera and Linkin Park, but also a few pop songs by New Order, Garbage and Ash’s great idol, Gwen Stefani with the No Doubt cover “Don’t Speak”. “It was the moment I realized what this band really meant,” said Ash. “And to write the most pop metal album of all time.” The work on the lyrics turned out to be as courageous as this new approach: Instead of many metaphors and symbol images, “I now only write what I really think and feel – right in your face! “

All of this can now be heard on the new, fourth album, which bears a deeply programmatic title with “Unbreakable”. It was a long way to this point for Ash Costello and her current colleagues Nikki Misery (guitar), Austin Ingerman (guitar) and Frankie Sil (bass), who prove to be “unbreakable” with this album. Accompanied by the tour drummer Longineu Parsons, New Years Day have since demonstrated in all their concerts how grand this band has found itself. Certainly also as part of their four Germany shows in March in Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin and Munich.
