In Corona Corner, we are asking musicians how the outbreak has effected them, how did they adapt to the situation, what did they learn. My dear colleague and vocalist of Croatian Death Metal band Defiant, Tomislav Kuternik, shares his Quarantine Story with us.
Hi! How are you doing during corona outbreak?
Overdosing on coffee, light cabin fever, trying to stay in shape as much as I can. Getting back in the gym will be very awkward. Everyone is going to wear long-sleeves I bet.
What have you cancelled/postponed due coronavirus?
A lot has been postponed: gigs and festivals in Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Romania, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Serbia and notably Croatia as well. We were to play with Stribog in Vintage Industrial Bar in Zagreb. With luck, we will reschedule all those dates when all this shit goes over which is staring to bit by bit. It could be worse, some bands had to cancel all tours or even worse got stuck in the middle of nowhere.
How the global coronavirus pandemic is directly impacting bands?
Like I mentioned, mostly gigs because we really planned to hit this year as much as we can, even our studio recording was pushed by the end of this year. We will all adapt, like we did before.
How are you keeping your fans during this chaotic period?
Like everyone else, by the power of the internet.
What will metal look like when we re-emerge from isolation?
The media love to embellish this kind of stuff, but little will change about it, there is monetary loss of course, but we are not doing it for the money. Who is doing it for that reason, is on the most wrong place possible.
Who will suffer the most after all: musicians, organizers promoters…
Everyone who had the worst timing during all this, possibly festivals who had big plans and needed to postpone all this for the next year.
What is your isolation soundtrack?
My Dying Bride “Ghost of Orion”
Abigor “Opus IV”
Black Sabbath “Eternal Idol”
Queensryche “Rage for Order”
Marduk “ROM 5:12”
Besides gigs, what/whom do you miss the most?
It’s strange to say it, but I miss people; the comradery and all the fuck ups that come with it in general. But yeah, I miss concerts the most, on our first gig the we play in front of 20 people I think we will have the biggest grin you can imagine the whole time.
Do you have any rehearsals during quarantine? If yes, how do they look like?
Not really, since all of us live in different towns and even countries. Nevertheless we rehearse our set list at home and work on the new album, so in that department there is no change.
Thank you so much for your time. Stay safe!
