Chinese folk metal band DreamSpirit performs in Novi Sad, Serbia

by Ivona Bogner

DreamSpirit, Chinese folk metal band, will perform in Novi Sad Serbia on 11 July, 2018 at Youth Fair Festival.

DreamSpirit was born in the peaceful town of Tai’an, Shandong. This is the gateway to China’s sacred mountain Mount Tai and is where the Confucius values were rooted. Childhood friends Shunzi (singer) and Bao (guitarist) found their own inner peace in heavy metal, owing much to the legendary Chinese band Tang Dynasty. To pursue their dream in music, the two relocated to Beijing in 2011.

Their emphasis on melodies in Chinese scales and poetic words attracted like-minded musicians in Beijing to complete the lineup. The debut album Mountains and Rivers came in 2014. The riffs are as heavy as Mount Tai and the use of folk instruments like Dizi and Xiao (Chinese flutes), guzheng, erhu, made their music unmistakably Chinese. The following year saw them taking on the world stage at Wacken Open Air in Germany: they competed on the W.O.A. Metal Battle and gained massive support for their unique sound. The band subsequently gained attentions from various festivals in Asia which resulted in successful performances on V-Rox showcase festival in Vladivostok, Russia and Korea’s Busan Rock Festival in 2016.

2017 saw the release of DreamSpirit’s second album General Triumphant, followed by a comprehensive tour covering most parts of China and Japan. The album was mixed and mastered by German metal producer Andy Classen. It’s a concept album that focuses on a fictional general of an ancient army. The songs are more guitar-oriented than the previous effort and each song stands on its own qualities, all carefully constructed with contagious melodies and dazzling guitar solos.

Currently, a European tour in summer 2018 is in the plan, including a date at Metaldays in Slovenia.
