Arwat: Quarantine Story

by Metal Jacket

In Corona Corner, we are asking musicians how the outbreak has effected them, how did they adapt to the situation, what did they learn. The four  members of Croatian Black/Thrash Metal band Arwat explain their ways of killing time in quarantine.

Hi! How are you doing during corona outbreak?
Hi Metal Jacket! And Magazine too! We’re doing fine, nothing special, just like in the old times. Still hungry, still thirsty, so still have to eat and drink regularly. There’s been quite little more drinking in the woods than in the bars. Now,  since the bars opened once again, there’s gonna be drinking in bars and woods. We wish they opened more bars in the woods… at least one for the start. 🙂

What have you cancelled/postponed due coronavirus?
We postponed rehearsals in the first couple of weeks while there have been these measures, but now we are back and we have started work on new album entitled “Criminaly Insane With Knowledge Of State Secrets.”

How the global coronavirus pandemic is directly impacting bands?
Well, some people got sick, we heard about that, but also bands are directly impacted with cancelled gigs, tours and festivals etc. But some bands used this to promote themselves online with streaming shows from empty bars, or from home. Some musicians whined about not earning money and they basically would beg for dollars on YouTube. Also, for some in countries that have stronger lockdown, it was hard for members to meet and work on music, or if the members were from different countries too. In Croatia, metal bands never have more than a few shows a year anyway, and it is almost always for free.

How are you keeping your fans during this chaotic period?
We are still a young (new) band, so we are still in a phase where we first need to attract fans in order to keep them. And we are currently working on that, Goggy you will get your CD soon 🙂

What will metal look like when we re-emerge from isolation?
Good. Very good. Metal is always looking good, and this may be good inspiration for metal bands, because there is no better inspiration than viruses, lockdowns, death, media manipulation, lies, deceits and so on. We hope that kids will (re)turn to metal and march in the last epic metal crusade with us, of course.

Who will suffer the most after all: musicians, organizers promoters…
After the dust is settled, everyone shall suffer and you can count on it! But we don’t think that music scene (which most of us musicians in the world are not even part of) will suffer, at least those who make the most money in general. Fans will be the most disappointed people of all in music scene, but we don’t think they will suffer severely. People who don’t have access to food, water or shelter on the other hand… but they suffer anyway, right?

What is your isolation soundtrack?
The same as always, we would prescribe lots of metal. If you have a headache listen to Slayer, if you have a sore throat listen to Grave Digger, if you have temperature listen to Ministry, if you have shortness of breath listen to Havok, if you have muscle pain listen to Manowar, if you have chills listen to Immortal and if you have all of those, there is a pretty good chance you have coronavirus, and then you should listen to the doctors…. of metal, which is us, haha 🙂

Besides gigs, what/whom do you miss the most?
Just regular hangouts and hangovers, haha, with friends and family. Also, eating burek after midnight while stumbling home drunk from the city. And there’s one more important thing for every independent artist, and that is public transportation, haha, yeah…

Do you have any rehearsals during quarantine? If yes, how do they look like?
We have just started rehearsing again, and it looks better than we look. Just kidding, we just started work on new material, it looks the same as before, and we hope you will hear it until the end of this year.

Thank you for your time, Arwat! Stay safe!
Thank you for interviewing us Metal Jacket Magazine, we appreciate it. We will try to stay safe, but there is no point, they are coming…
